“church of Christ” refers to a group of Christians that seek to follow the teachings and practices found in the New Testament as closely as possible. Our focus is on being part of the church that Jesus established, rather than following man-made traditions or denominations. We’re dedicated to living out the faith as outlined in Scripture and welcoming everyone to join us in this commitment.
Getting more connected with our church is easy! You can start by joining us for our Sunday worship and Bible class. We also have various groups and activities throughout the year where you can meet others and get involved. If you still aren’t sure, feel free to set up a Bible Study with one of our members or visit our welcome area in our lobby.
The Lord’s Supper is a way for Christians to remember and honor Jesus’s sacrifice. Every Sunday, we share bread and fruit of the vine as Jesus instructed, symbolizing His body and blood given for us. It’s a weekly reminder of His love and the incredible sacrifice He made for our salvation.
We don’t use instruments during worship because we aim to follow the principle of authority that is central to the Bible. From the beginning, God has emphasized the importance of acting according to His will, rather than our ideas. In Colossians 3:17, Paul instructs us to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, meaning we should act only with his approval. Just as God was specific about how sacrifices were to be made in the Old Testament, the New Testament directs us to worship through singing, not playing instruments (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19). So, we strive to respect this guidance and worship in a way that aligns with the authority of Christ.
Becoming a Christian is about understanding a few key things rather than knowing every detail of the Bible. First, you need to recognize that everyone has sinned and needs forgiveness (Romans 3:10, 23; 1 John 1:8). Second, you should know that Jesus is the Son of God who died and was resurrected to save us from our sins (Luke 19:10; John 3:16; Romans 5:6-8). Finally, you need to be ready to take action by believing in Jesus (John 8:24), repenting of your sins (Luke 13:3, 5), confessing Him as Lord (Romans 10:10), and being baptized for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:38). You don’t need to know everything before you start—just these essential steps. After becoming a Christian, you'll continue to grow and learn more about your faith (2 Peter 3:18; Hebrews 5:12; 1 Peter 3:15).

Visiting a new church can feel a bit unfamiliar, but we’re here to help make your experience as smooth as possible. Let us know when you’re coming and if you have any questions, so we can make sure you feel welcomed!

Crossville church of Christ is blessed with dedicated and humble servants of Christ who embody the spirit of love and service. Get to know them!

We are one of many congregations who believe it is possible to have first century New Testament Christianity today. In order for this to be a reality, we must speak where the Bible speaks and remain silent where the Bible is silent.
We must be the same in name, organization, worship, doctrine and life as was the first century church.
The history of the church of Christ that meets on Main Street in Crossville dates back to 1923. Prior to that time, churches of Christ in Cumberland County had been meeting at Linary, Lantana and Clifty. In 1923, the J.E. Baxter family moved to Crossville from Cookeville, TN and, finding no congregation of the New Testament church here, they began meeting with the J.S. Schulgen family in their homes. The nucleus of this congregation, in the beginning, was seven persons from those two families.
In May 1924, a tent meeting was conducted with Will J. Cullum preaching and J. Sterling Turner leading the singing. By the close of this meeting, which lasted for several weeks, there were about 35 members of the church. They rented a meeting place on the second floor of the Potter Building on North Main Street. In October 1924, the L.P. Shanks family moved to Crossville, adding their strength to the newly formed group. Brother Shanks later served as an elder of the church. Late in 1924, a lot on the corner of First Street and Thurman Avenue was purchased and a brick building was erected. The congregation met for the first time in their new, although unfinished, building in November 1925. This building served as the meeting place for the church until January 1949.
The original church building at 423 North Main Street was used for the first time on the second Sunday of January 1949. The land upon which the building stands was given to the church by the late B.L. Dooley, Sr., and his wife. Brother Dooley served as an elder until his death. The later brother Clyde Wilson, who served as an elder until his death, supervised the construction of the building.
The new building was completed during the summer of 1986. The new facility is constructed of native Crab Orchard stone.
The congregation has been blessed with fine gospel preaching. Although J.E. Baxter, J.D. Jones, and W.C. Phillips worked with the congregation as part-time preachers; the first located evangelist was Stoy Pate, who preached here from 1935 to 1940. He was followed by James C. Bays, Rufus R. Clifford, A.R. Hill, Charles G. Caldwell, Roy J. Hearn, Ray Frizzell, Jr., John Jenkins, who served this congregation for more than twenty years, Jim Franks, Steve Riley, Sidney White, Wade Webster, Barry Kennedy, and our current preacher, Alan Judd.
We’re here to support you in any way we can. Your well-being and spiritual growth are important to us, and we’re eager to help.
If you are in need of prayer, we invite you to share your request with us. Our church family is dedicated to praying for one another and seeking God’s guidance, comfort, and healing in every situation.
Are you interested in deepening your understanding of God's word? Are you ready to take the next step in your faith? We would be honored to open the Bible with you and grow together in His Word.
